French professional associations ANIA and ILEC have committed themselves in 2008 to achieve a packaging reduction target. The packaging chain accreditation by the French public authorities, renewed in 2010, includes a packaging reduction objective of 100 000 tons. The associated quantification methodology shall be based on companies’ actual actions, allowing the identification of packaging reduction best practices.
To this purpose, Eco-Emballages has implemented the packaging reduction indicator and a dedicated website, where companies can submit their packaging reduction actions. It is a unique quantification tool, to ensure packaging reduction has been achieve without transferring materials to secondary or tertiary packaging, without material substitution and with no degradation of pack recyclability.
Inspired by key prevention indicators published by the French Packaging Council, necessary information to submit a case is the one commonly used by packaging engineers: weight, material type, possibly dimensions or amount of recycled material, and number of units placed on the market. The methodology has been audited then validated by the French EPA, and complies with European standards for packaging reduction assessment. It is a reference methodology that did not exist until now, validated and shared by all stakeholders and connected to a best practices catalogue.
Packaging reduction indicator is also a tool for each position in the company: monitoring tool for packaging engineer, sustainability performance indicator for sustainability managers, best practices valorization for marketing or communication manager, etc. Everybody can use it!
The dedicated website is also the way to participate to the 2012 Green Dot Awards, of which nominees will be announced at Emballages 2012 exhibition and award winners revealed for Eco-Emballages 20 years celebration in December 2012.
